Peter Bourland is a Licensed Professional Counselor with over 25 years of counseling, coaching, and team leadership experience. As a certified Myers-Briggs practitioner and graduate of The Parent Coaching Institute, Peter approaches his work from a strengths-based, Appreciative Inquiry mindset while coaching individuals, parents and teams toward growth and development.
Peter received his B.A. in Kinesiology with an emphasis in coaching and teaching from Westmont College. After coaching high school and collegiate soccer, he completed an M.A. in Counseling Psychology with honors from Denver Seminary. Peter honed his clinical and leadership skills working with developmentally disabled adults, inner-city at-risk teenagers, middle school and high school adolescents, and adults with severe and persistent mental illness. Peter’s years as a therapist at an inpatient adolescent treatment facility prepared him well for a Director of Youth Ministry position at one of Colorado’s largest Episcopal churches. Peter went on to become Program Director and then President and COO of a residential adult care facility for individuals with acute mental illness. These experiences allowed Peter to deepen his clinical understanding of family and individual dynamics within the mental health system. As President and COO, Peter led fund-raising initiatives, worked with board members, and managed cross-functional teams, including volunteers and staff.
After moving to Michigan, Peter became certified as a Myers-Briggs practitioner and completed coursework at The Parent Coaching Institute where he was trained using the Appreciative Inquiry model for change. It was during this time Peter realized he was returning to his original dream of coaching but rather than coaching athletes he would use the tools, skills, and knowledge from the clinical mental health field to support and coach individuals who were seeking help raising their children, clients seeking change in their personal lives, and teams wanting to be more effective in their work. People who work with Peter often describe him as an insightful leader and a visionary intuitive whose strength lies in strategic thinking and relationship building.
